Mark of the Ninja is a side-scrolling stealth video game. Mark of the Ninja consists of stealth-oriented 2D platforming. The character is expected to sneak through a series of environments while staying outside guards and performing silent assassinations. Levels are divided into areas of light and darkness; the player’s character is visible to enemies in the former and invisible in the latter, although within a certain immediate distance from the face of an enemy, the player is spotted regardless of lighting. Sounds like running can also give away the location of the player’s character and are visually represented by a fast-growing circle. Unusual for a platform, Mark of the Ninja uses a line mechanic, which means enemies invisible to the character are also invisible to the player, although their on-screen sounds are represented in the same way as the player character.
