QuickBooks Pro is a free accounting package designed for business owners who want to curb things with spreadsheets and sticky notes, but want a no-risk way of using themselves to use dedicated accounting software.
To reassure the intimidated neophytes, the Simple Start interface takes a valid ‘money-in-money-out’ flowchart approach, and offers straightforward tutorials on basic tasks such as depositing deposits. Users who want more features can purchase payroll and credit card modules, but the 14 standardized reports (such as income statements and balance sheets) included in the basic package should suffice for most users. New for 2008 is the ability to enter Excel data and the absence of restrictions on the number of allowed customer and supplier contacts.
Simple Start provides an excellent introduction to accounting software, but many companies are rapidly outgrowing it. If your accounting needs are basic, then it’s worth looking at. Otherwise, you might be better off investing in an accounting package that offers time-saving features like electronic data download and payroll management.
