Sonic Riders is a turn-off video game. The game is played in its entirety with the help of hoverboards, which function largely like skateboards. Players must compete on seven other contestants on a total of 16 tracks, 9 of which must be unlocked through progress in story mode, and two of them must be unlocked by winning gold in each World Grand Prix (5 tracks per Grand Prix). Each individual character has different metrics, slightly changing their performance in racing.
A key component of the game is the air tank that is displayed in the bottom right corner of the screen. Air acts as fuel for Extreme Gear, and gradually depletes as the race goes on. and through certain maneuvers. These include the corner, allowing the player to round sharp turns with ease, and build up tension before a jump, which involves using the air to lift the player higher. If a player is out of thin air, their character will start to run, which puts them at various disadvantages; they cannot be boosted, attacked, easily angled, or jump loaded. After ramps, players can perform various tricks that refill the air gauge to their rating. In Story Mode, players take on one another in succession based on the storyline in order to defeat the Babylon Rogues and win the Grand Prix.
